escalator
Escalier mécanique, escalateur généralement utilisé dans les lieux publics (aéroports, accès aux bouches de métro, gares ferroviaires, grands magasins, centres commerciaux, etc.), fonctionnamt sur le principe de la chenille de tracteur. Chaque marche est un élément de la chaîne et le tout est entraîné par un puissant moteur électrique. Le cœur de l'escalator est un couple de chaînes, faisant une boucle autour de deux pignons. Le mécanisme de l'escalator permet que chaque marche reste parfaitement horizontale pendant le mouvement. La rampe est également mobile et suit un chemin parallèle. Elle est généralement réalisée en caoutchouc et forme une boucle. Sa vitesse est évidemment synchronisée avec celle de l'escalier. Chaque marche présente une surface rainurée. À la sortie et à l'entrée est disposé un peigne dont chaque dent glisse entre ces rainures. Ce système ingénieux permet d'empêcher qu'un objet se coince dans le mécanisme et évite les accidents et les blessures.
